WhatsApp to Stop Working on Some iPhones and Other Android Phones in 2025: Full List and Details

Close to 20 Android smartphones will lose access to WhatsApp starting January 1, 2025, as the popular messaging app discontinues support for older devices. Affected models include 10-year-old phones from brands like Samsung, LG, and Sony running Android KitKat (version 4.4) or earlier.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, explained that the decision is part of its ongoing effort to enhance features, improve security, and keep up with technological advancements. This means devices running on outdated operating systems will no longer meet the app’s requirements.

What This Means for Android Users

The affected devices are primarily those released in 2013 or earlier, as these older smartphones cannot support the app’s latest features. From January 2025, users of these phones will be unable to send messages, make calls, or access any WhatsApp functionality.

For Android users, WhatsApp will now only support devices running on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer. Users with outdated devices will receive multiple notifications, allowing them time to back up data and upgrade their phones to maintain service access.

Impact on iPhone Users

The change isn’t exclusive to Android. Starting May 2025, iPhones running iOS 12 will also lose access to WhatsApp. To continue using the app, iPhone users must upgrade to devices that support iOS 15.1 or newer.

Why WhatsApp Is Making This Change

In a statement, WhatsApp emphasized its commitment to providing reliable and secure messaging for its global user base. This requires discontinuing support for older devices and operating systems that cannot accommodate the app’s growing feature set, which includes advanced privacy tools and enhanced communication capabilities.

“Going forward, WhatsApp support on devices that run KaiOS will also end. Impacted users will be notified beforehand,” the company revealed. KaiOS users are advised to back up important data as their devices do not support restoration after losing WhatsApp access.

Key Takeaways for Affected Users

If your device is among those losing support, it’s time to upgrade. Phones running outdated software are often more vulnerable to security risks and cannot access WhatsApp’s latest features. The app will continue to notify users through its platform, offering ample time to prepare for the changes.

List of Key Requirements for WhatsApp in 2025:

Android devices: Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer.

iPhones: iOS 15.1 or newer.

KaiOS devices: No longer supported after the update.

The move ensures WhatsApp remains at the forefront of secure, feature-rich communication while encouraging users to keep up with the latest technological developments. For those with older devices, upgrading now is the best way to avoid disruptions.
