Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, faced a major challenge in several Kusasi-dominated communities, where he didn’t receive a single vote in some polling stations.
This outcome is believed to stem from a long-standing tension between the Kusasis and Mamprusis, two ethnic groups with a history of conflict. Being of Mamprusi descent, Dr. Bawumia faced strong resistance in these areas, with reports suggesting that chiefs in the Kusaug Traditional Area advised their people not to vote for him.

The situation was made worse by a ban on NPP campaign activities in the Kusaug Traditional Area before the elections. This restriction, enforced by traditional authorities, limited the party’s ability to engage with voters and share their campaign message.
As a result, polling stations in these communities showed a clear rejection of Dr. Bawumia, with some even recording zero votes for him. This reflects the deep-rooted opposition he faced in these areas.
